History of Gray County
Gray County, formed in 1876 from the Bexar District, was named in honor of Peter W. Gray, politician and lawyer of his time during the Republic of Texas and Civil War times. Its prehistoric Plains Apache inhabitants gave way to the Apaches, who were driven out to the Comanches as well as Kiowas.
Demography
At the time of 2000, the 2000 census at the time of 2000, 22744 residents were living in the county, with 8,793 households and 6,049 families lived throughout the town. The density of the population was 24 persons in a sq mile (9/km 2). The housing units of 10,567 averaged 11 per mile 2. (4/km 2). The ethnic makeup for the entire county is 82.15 percent white, 5.85% African American, 0.94% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 8.25 percent of other races and 2.42 percent of multiple races. Around 13.01 percent of the people in the county were Hispanic and Latino, regardless of race.
Of the households of 8,793, 30.00% had children who were younger than 18 living in them. 57.00 percent of them were couples who lived together. 9.00 percent of households were female householders with no husband and 31.20 percent of households were not family-based. The majority of households comprised 28.70 percent of households were comprised of individuals. 15.30 percent had someone living on their own who was aged 65 or older. or older. The median household size was 2.39 and the average household size of 2.93.
Within the County, the distribution of age was 24.00 percent under 18. 8.40 percent between 18 and 24, 27.20% from 25 to 44, 22.30% from 45 to 64 from 45 to 64, and 18.10 percent of those aged 65 and over. It was the average age 39. In 100 women the number was 104.00 males. In 100 women aged 18 or over they had 103.70 males.
The median earnings for households of the area was $31,368, while the median for a family, it was $40,019. Males earned a median of $32,401 and the females’ $20,158. The per-capita earnings in the County was $15,702. The county had a population of 11.20 percent of households and 13.80 percent of the people living there were less than the poverty threshold which included 17.60 percent of those who were younger than 18 years old and 9.60 percent of those aged 65 or older.
