History of Comanche County

Comanche County was organized from parts that were part of Coryell as well as Bosque Counties on May 17,1856 and named for the group of Indians. The first seat for the County was the town of Troy and was later changed to Cora in the honor the memory of Cora Beeman the daughter of Alonzo Beeman from Bell County.

Demography

In the census of 2000 there were 14,026 residents with 5,522 households and 3,926 families living throughout the county. The density of the population of 15 persons per sq mile (6/km ²). There 7105 housing units with the average of eight per sq mile (3/km ²). The racial composition in the County was 87.30 percentage white, 0.44 percentage Black and African American, 0.61% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 9.70% from other races and 1.82 percentage of at least two races. Around 20% of people comprised Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The average size of a household is 2.48 and the median family size was 2.98.

The county’s population was dispersed by age group, with 25.30 percent of the population aged 18 and under, 7.10% from 18 to 24, 23.30% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64 in the range of 45-64, and 20.30 percent aged 65 years or older. old or older.
