History of Galveston County

Congress established Galveston as a port of entry in 1837. Fort Travis protected the port between 1836 and 1844. Galveston County was formed in 1838 under the republican state of Harrisburg, Liberty, and Brazoria counties. It was organized in 1839. The county was incorporated in 1839.
