History of McCulloch County

It was first established in 1856, and was later established after 1876. It was named after Benjamin McCulloch, a famous Texas Ranger and Confederate general. The geographic central region of Texas is located in McCulloch County, near Brady.

Demography

In 2000, according to the census in 2000,8,205 residents comprised 3,277 households and 267 families resided throughout the county. The density of the population was 8 people per sq mile (3/km ²). The 4,184 housing units had an average of 4 square miles (2/km ²). The ethnic makeup in the County was 84.64 percentage White 1.57 percent Black and African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 11.71% from other races and 1.63 percentage of people from at least two races. Around 27percent of residents comprised Hispanic or Latinos from any race.

In the 3,277 households 30.70 percent had children under 18 years old who were living with them. 55.30 percent of them were couples who lived together. 10.20 percent were female householders with no husband as well as 30.80 percent were not families. The majority of households comprised 28.20 percent of all households were comprised of individuals. 15.80 percent had a person living in a home that was 65 years old or older.
