History of Comal County
Comal County was created out of parts that comprised Bexar, Travis and Gonzales Counties on the 24th of March, 1846 and was incorporated that year. The county was named for Comal River. Comal River. The first people to settle in the county were Germans and emigrants from Germany who left the Fatherland along with Prince Solms-Braunfels in 1846.
Demography
In in the Census of 2010, there were 108.472 people, 29,066 households and 21,886 families within the County. Its number of people living there was 139 inhabitants for every sq mile (54/km 2). The housing unit count was 32,718 with the average of 58 inhabitants per sq mile (22/km 2). The racial composition in the County was 89.08 percent White, 0.95% Black or African American, 0.53% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 6.98% from other races and 1.96 percent of multiple races. 22.57 percent of the residents comprised Hispanic and Hispanic or Latino regardless of race.
The number of households was 29,066 from which 33.30 percent had children under 18 years old who were living in the household, 62.80% were married couples living together, 9.00% had a female householder without a husband and 24.70 percent were not families. 20.60 percent of all households were comprised of singles with no spouses, and 9.00 percent had someone living in a home that was 65 years old or older. The median household size is 2.64 while the median size of a family was 3.05.
An Williams Institute analysis of the census data for 2010 discovered that there were 4.4 same-sex couples per household within the county.
The county’s population was distributed by age group, with 25.50 percent aged 18 or less, 7.00% from 18 to 24, 27.50% from 25 to 44, 25.20% from 45 to 64 from 45 to 64, and 14.80 percent that were 65 years old or more. the age of 65 or over. A median of age 39. To every female the number was 96.00 males. In 100 women 18 or over the number was 93.20 males.
The median income of households of the area was $47,147 and the median earnings for the family of four was $52,455. Males earned a median of $36,048 as opposed to $25,940 for females. The per-capita earnings of the entire county is $21,914. Around 6.40 percentage of households and 8.60 percent of the people living there were under the poverty threshold that includes 11.50 percent of those who were younger than 18 years old and 7.30 percent of those aged 65 or older.
