History of Archer County

Archer County was created by the Texas Legislature on January 22 1858. The county was officially established on July 27, 1880.. The county’s name was derived from one of the earliest Texas Patriot, Branch T. Archer (1790-1856). First and later settlers who established residences within Archer County were Dr.

Demography

In 2000, 8,854 inhabitants included 3,345 households as well as 2,515 families lived within the County. The density was 10 persons per sq mile (4/km ²). There were 3,871 dwelling units, which had an average of 4 sq mi (2/km ²). The ethnic makeup for the entire county is 95.54 percent white, 0.08% African American, 0.62% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.03 percent Pacific Islander, 2.28% from other races and 1.32 percentage of people from multiple races. The county’s population was 4.87 percent of the people living there were Hispanic and Latinos of all races.

In the 3,345 household members, 37.20% had children younger than 18 living in them, 65.00% were married couples living together, 7.20% had a female householder who had no husband present and 24.80 percent were not families. Of the households with no spouses, 89.8% were heterosexual, 1.9% were same-sex males and 8.3 percent were females who had a same-sex. Around 21.90 percent of households were comprised of only one person who were single, and 10.20 percent of households were occupied by someone aged over 65 living in a home. The median household size was 2.63 and the median number of families was 3.08.

Within the County, distribution of age was 28.20 percent of those under 18 years of age, 7.00 percent from 18 to 24. 27.40 percent from 25 to 44 years old, 23.50 percent from age 45-64 as well as 13.90 percent who were 65 and over. Median age of 38. To every female it was 100.20 males. In every 100 women 18 or over the number was 96.20 males.
