History of Medina County

Medina County is immediately west of Bexar County in southwest Texas. It was established out of Bexar County and organized on August 7, 1848. The first settlement in Medina County was Castroville which was established in 1844. Quihi was established in 1845. It was followed by Vandenburg and New Fountain in 1846 and D’Hanis in 1848.

Demography

At the time of the census in 2000, the population was 39,304 12 880 households, and 10,136 families living within the county. There are 30 inhabitants per square mile (11/km 2). However, 1482 housing units in the county at an average rate of 11.11 per sq mile (4/km ²). The ethnic makeup in the County was 79.38 percent White, 2.20% Black or African American, 0.68% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 14.48% from other races and 2.88 percentage of multiple races. 45.47 percent of the residents comprised Hispanic or Latino of any race.

In all, there were 12 880 households among which 39.10 percent had children younger than 18 years old who were living in the household, 63.20% were married couples living together, 11.10% had a female householder without a husband present or present, and 21.30 percent were not families. 18.20 percent of households were comprised of people with no spouses, and 8.20 percent of households had a person living in a home that was 65 years old or older. The median household size is 2.91, as well as the typical size of a family, was 3.30.
