History of Crosby County
Crosby County was formally formed following the elections of 1886 and Estacado (the name that was adopted for the town, which was previously named Marietta) named the seat of county government. The open-range grazing practice continued until the mid-1880s, after which barbed wire was installed and small farmers and ranchers began to compete for the land.
Demography
At the time of the census in 2000, 7,072 residents were living in 2,512 households. 1,866 families lived within the County. The density of population is eight each square mile. The 3,202 housing units had an average of four units per square mile. The ethnic makeup for the entire county is 63.77 percent White, 3.89% Black or African American, 0.54% Native American, 0.03% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 29.89% from other races and 1.81 percent from at least two races. Around 48.93 percent of the people living there were Hispanic and Latino, regardless of race.
Of the 2512 household members, 35.6% had children who were younger than 18 living in them. 59.0 percent of them are married couples that live together. 11.4 percent had females as householders without a husband present as well as 25.7 percent were not family households. Around 23.8 percent of households were comprised of individuals. 13.4 percent had someone living on their own who was 65 years old or older. The average size of a household is 2.78 while the median size of a family was 3.30.
The county’s population was divided as 30.7 percent of the population was below the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 24.0% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64 from 45 to 64, and 15.6 percent of the population was aged 65 years or older. In the median, there was a age range of 34. To every female the number was 91.1 males. In 100 women aged 18 or over it was 87.2 males.
The median income of households within the County was $27,769 for a family of $29,891. Males earned a median of $23,775 and $17,229 for females. The per capita income of County was $14,445. Around 22.6 percent from families, and 28.1 percent of the population were living below the poverty level that includes 36.6 percent of people aged 18 or less and 22.7 percent of those aged 65 and over.
