History of Callahan County

The area was first explored , and documented by the The Dr. Henry C. Connelly of the Chihuahua expedition in 1839 and 1840. Callahan County was formed by the Texas legislature in 1858 from Bexar, Bosque, and Travis counties. It was named in honor of James Hughes Callahan, a survivor of the Goliad Massacre and leader of the Callahan expedition.

Demography

As per the 2010 United States Census, Callahan County had 13,544 people. For non-Hispanics, this included 12,065 White (89.1 percent) and 135 Black (1.0%)) 56 Asian (0.4 percent) as well as the 61 Native American, 7 Pacific Islander, 10 of different races and 185 of multiple races. It is estimated that the Hispanic (or Latino) population comprised 1,025 persons (7.6 percent).

Of the households of 5,447, 27.1% had children younger than 18 in their homes, 57.0 percent had married couples who lived together. 5.2 percent included a female householder with children, but no husband, and 28.5 percent were not families. Around 24.7 percent of households contained just one person and 32.3 percent of households were occupied by someone aged over 65.

The distribution of age was 76.2 percent over 18 and 18.2 percentage of people 65 or over. Its median was 43.0 years. The ratio of gender was 48.8 percent male and 51.2 percent female. Within the households with 5,447 people, 78.7% were owner-occupied and 21.3 percent were renter-occupied.

At the time of the 2000 census in 2000 12,905 people were living in 5,061 households and 3,750 families lived within the county. The density of the population is 14 inhabitants per square mile (6/km 2). There were 5,925 dwelling units. had an average of 7 square miles (3/km 2). The ethnic makeup for the entire county is 94.78 94% white, 0.22 percentage Black and African American, 0.63% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 2.70% from other races and 1.35 percent of at least two races. 6.29 percent of the residents comprised Hispanic or Latino from any race. Of the 5,061 households 31.90 percent had children younger than 18 years old living in the household, 61.60 percent are married couples that live together. 9.30 percent had females living in the household without a husband present and 25.90 percent of households were not family-based. Around 23.30 percent of households comprised only one person, while 12.20 percent were comprised of just one person aged 65 years or over. The average size of a household was 2.53 and the average household size of 2.97.

The distribution of age was 26.20 percent under the age of 18 years old, 6.60 percent between 18 and 24, 24.90% from 25 to 44, 25.30% from 45 to 64 from 45 to 64, and 17.00 percent 65 and over. In the middle, there was a median age of forty. In 100 women it was 94.40 males. To every female aged 18 or over it was 90.90 males.

A median family income of $32,463, and it was the average family’s income that reached $37,165. Males had a median earnings of $27,086 and $19,720 females. The per capita income of County was $15,204. Around 9.00 percent of households and 12.20 percent of the residents were living under the poverty limit that includes 14.80 percent of the population aged 18 or less and 9.80 percent of people 65 and over.
