History of Bexar County

Bexar County was established on the 20th of December 1836 It encompassed nearly all of the western part of the Republic of Texas. It also included the undisputed regions that ran from the western part of New Mexico northward to Wyoming. Following the state’s creation 128 counties were created out of the state’s territory.

Demography

According to the 2010 United States Census, there were 1,714,773 residents within the County. Of them, 72.9% were White, 7.5% Black or African American, 2.4% Asian, 0.8% Native American, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 12.7% of another race, and 3.5 percentage from two races or more. 58.7 percent of them comprised Hepanics or Latino (of all races).

At the time of the census in 2000, 1,392,931 inhabitants included 488,942 households as well as 345,681 families resided throughout the county. The density of the population was 1,117 people in a sq mile (431/km 2). There were 521,359 dwelling units with an average rate of 418 people per sq mile (161/km 2). The ethnic composition in the County was 68.86 percent White, 7.18% Black or African American, 0.80% Native American, 1.61% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 17.80% from other races and 3.64 percentage of people from multiple races. Around 54.35 percent of the population comprised Hispanic and Latinos of all races.

In 488,942 households 36.60 percent had children younger than 18 years old who were living in the household, 50.50% were married couples living together, 15.50% had a female householder without a husband present and 29.30 percent were not families. The majority of households comprised 24.00 percent of households were comprised of people with no spouses, and 7.40 percent had a person living in a home on their own and was 65 years old or older. The median household size of 2.78 while the median size of the family was 3.33.
