Houston Winter Activities – What to Do?

Date:

Houston isn’t a location famed for its snow. That doesn’t matter though. After all, who needs snow to have a good time in Houston, Texas?

Let’s take a little look at some of the most fantastic winter activities that you can take part in when you visit this stunning city.

It really is the perfect place to head if you want to escape the cold of your location during those long winters.

Shopping

We all know that some of the best deals in the shops happen just before Christmas, so why not go on a bit of a shopping spree in Houston? This is a huge city and there is representation from all the major brands, all vying for your business.

You don’t even just need to hang around downtown Houston, there are plenty of different places for you to explore around this fantastic city, so grab your wallet and hit those shops.

Kayaking

Crazy right? It’s the dead of winter and you can still carry out a few water sports! There are plenty of places to take part in a spot of kayaking around Houston, but one of my favorite places is at Buffalo Bayou.

This isn’t just for experts with a kayak either, there are plenty of companies which offer day-long excursions for the beginner. This is perfect if you are planning something a bit more unique for your vacation.

You will need to make reservations for your excursions in advance however, they do book up incredibly quickly during the winter as everybody heads here!

Basketball

The Houston Rockets are the resident sports team for Houston, and they play some pretty good basketball too. Whilst there are many sports that take place throughout winter, there is absolutely nothing better than watching a game of basketball.

Their season is only just starting to ‘hot up’ during the winter, which means you are in line for a pretty competitive game of sport. Certainly something worth checking out, especially if you are heading from abroad and want to take a little look at the American’s fascination with basketball.

Golf

Another activity you wouldn’t normally expect to be playing in the winter, but honestly, Houston boasts some of the best golf courses for this time of year. Both beginners and professionals are catered for here. One of my favorites is the Moody Gardens Golf Course.

The course is ever so tranquil and beautiful. A number of palm trees line the course so it feels as though you have an exotic feel to your game. It also helps that the golf course is nestled right on the beach, which is absolutely perfect if you are after beautiful and stunning views whilst you play your game.

First Saturday Arts Market

As you can probably tell from the name, this particular market is held on the first Saturday of every single month. In addition to the plethora of boutique market stalls offering their wares, including art, jewelry and other crafts, there are also a number of live performances and music throughout.

It is an absolutely fantastic day out and any visitor to Houston needs to come here at least once. I suggest that you just as the market opens at 11 am, it is less crowded and some of the best bargains can be had around this time.

The Battleship Texas

This may seem a little odd to include a winter activities list, but bear with me here. Throughout the winter a number of events take place on the oldest World War ship to still be afloat.

In addition to tours throughout the day, your children may even have a chance to spend the night on the ship, an experience which really is quite riveting. This should be top of your list when you head to the area.

The Ice at Discovery Green

If you are out in the winter then you are most likely going to want to be taking part in at least some winter activities. Thankfully you can do that at ‘The Ice’. This, as the name suggests is a huge ice rink.

Nothing really is better than skating with the backdrop of Houston as your scene. This is an absolute must visit for anybody.
