History of Hardin County

Hardin County was formed in 1858 and was created after the merger of Jefferson as well as Liberty Counties, and was named after William Hardin, a member of the pioneer Texas family, as per the Almanac. Census records are available for the years 1860-1880. They date through the 1800’s.

Demography

In the census of 2010, Hardin County had a population of 54,635. Its ethnic as well as racial mix of the county’s population was 88.0 percent non-Hispanic whites, 5.8% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 1.3 percentage from another race and 1.3 percentage of people from at least two races.

In in the census in 2000, 48,073 residents, 17,805 households and 13,638 families lived in the county. The density of the population was 54 people per sq mi (21/km 2). There were 19,836 dwelling units that on average were 22 sq miles (9/km 2). The race composition for the entire county is 90.86 percent White, 6.91% Black or African American, 0.32% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.74% from other races and 0.93 percent of the population was of people from at least two races. Around 2.54 percent of the residents comprised Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the households of 17,805, 37.2% had children who were under 18 in the household, 62.6% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder without a husband present and 23.4 percent of households were not family-based; 20.7% of all households were comprised of people, and 9.2 percent had a person living on their own who was or over. The average size of a household is 2.68 while the median size of a family was 3.09.

Within the County, the distribution of age was 27.8 percent of those under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64 as well as 12.2 percent of those aged 65 and over. The median age was 36 . To every female it was 96.7 males. When 100 women were 18 and older it was 92.4 males.

The median household income of the area was $37,612, while for a family of four, it was $42,890. Males earned a median of $35,881 and the $22,823 females earned. The per-capita earnings of the entire county was $17,962. The county had a population of 8.8 percent of households and 11.20 percent of the residents were living under the poverty limit that includes 13.3 percent of people younger than 18 years old and 10.6 percent of people 65 or older.
