History of Frio County
Frio County was formed by the Texas legislature out of parts from Atascosa, Bexar, and Uvalde counties on February 1, 1858 however, it was not formed until May 22nd 1871. In the meantime, the county remained under the authority that of Bexar County.
Demography
In 2000, according to the 2000 census at the time of 2000, 16252 residents were living in the county, with 4,743 households and 3,642 families lived in the county. Its densities of the population of 14 persons per sq mile (6/km 2). 5660 households had an average of 5 per sq mile (2/km 2). The race composition in the County was 71.86 percent White, 4.87% Black or African American, 0.58% Native American, 0.41% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 19.76% from other races and 2.50 percent from multiple races. The county’s population was 73.76 percent of the people living there were Hispanic or Latino from any race.
Of the households of 4,743, 40.70% had children who were younger than 18 living in them. 55.20 percent of them were couples who lived together. 16.00 percent were female householders with no husband and 23.20 percent of households were not family-based. Around 20.60 percent of households consisted of individuals. 9.30 percent of households had someone living on their own who was 65 years old or older. The average size of a household of 2.98 as well as the typical size of a family was 3.44.
In the county the population was split in the following order: 28.70 percent younger than 18 years old, 11.20% from 18 to 24, 30.80% from 25 to 44, 18.70% from 45 to 64 as well as 10.60 percent aged 65 years or older. the age of 65 or over.
