History of Freestone County

Freestone County became formed by 1851. It was established in 1850, derived from Limestone County. Freestone County derives its name from the local stone. Freestone County is located ninety miles to the south from Dallas, Texas and one hundred fifty miles to the to the north of Houston, Texas along Interstate Forty Five.

Demography

In the census of the year 2010, 19,816 people included 6,588 households as well as 4,664 families lived within the County. The density of the population was 20 people/sq mile (8/km ²). The housing units of 8,138 averaged 9 sq miles (4/km ²).

The ethnic makeup for the entire county was 73.1 percent white, 16.1% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 8.1 percent from other races and 1.6 percent from at least two races. The county was home to 13.6 percent of the population comprised Hispanic or Latino from any race.

From the 7259 families that were surveyed, 28% had children younger than 18 living in them, 54.5% were married couples living together, 10.5% had a female householder who had no husband and 30.6 percent were not family households. Around 27% of households were comprised of single people, while 12.4 percent of households had a person living in a home that was or over. The median household size was 2.51 and the average size of a family was 3.05.

The county’s distribution of age was 23.6 percent of people under the age of 18. 8.9 percent between 18 and 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64 as well as 16.4 percent of those aged 65 and over. Median age of 38. To every 100 women,, there where 110.50 males. To every 100 females aged 18 or over the figure was 110.80 males.

The median earnings for households living within the County was $44,560 for a family of $59,696. Males earned a median of $30,633 as opposed to 19,000 for women. The per-capita earnings in the County was $15,338.
