History of Falls County

The state legislature created Falls County from Limestone and Milam Counties in 1850 It was named in honor of the falls that flow down the Brazos River. Marlin was named County seat. The census of 1860 showed that the county was home to 1,716 slaves. Falls County voted in favor independence of the Union.

Demography

According to 2000, the Census at the time of 2000, 18576 inhabitants included 6,496 households and 4,410 families inhabited the county. Its densities of the population of 24 persons per sq mile (9/km 2). 7 658 dwelling units had an average of 10 people per sq mile (4/km 2). The race composition in the County was 61.50 percent White, 27.45% Black or African American, 0.50% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 8.81% from other races and 1.59 percent from at least two races. Around 15.83 percent of the total population was Hispanic or Latino from any race.

In the households of 6,496, 30.60% had children younger than 18 living in the household, 48.20% were married couples living together, 15.60% had a female householder who had no husband present and 32.10 percent were not family households. The majority of households comprised 29.40 percent of all households were comprised of individuals, while 15.40 percent had someone living in a home on their own and was 65 years old or older. The average size of a household is 2.54 while the median size of a family was 3.15.

In the county there was a population distribution according to 27.60 percent of people below the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 27.00% from 25 to 44, 20.80% from 45 to 64 from 45 to 64, and 16.90 percent of those that were 65 years old or more. the age of 65 or over. The median age was 36 . To every female it was 85.80 males. To every female 18 or over the figure was 74.40 males.

The median income of households within the County was $26,589 as well for families. of $32,666. Males earned a median of $27,042 and the female median of $20,128. The per-capita amount of income of the entire county was 14,311. The county’s per capita income was $14,311. 18.80 percent of households and 22.60 percent of the population had incomes below poverty limit that includes 28.70 percent of people aged 18 or less and 18.40 percent of people 65 and over.
