History of Duval County

The county was first established in 1858, and was later incorporated in 1876. The county’s name is a tribute to Burr H. Duval, one of the soldiers in the Texas Revolution who died in the Goliad Massacre.

Demography

According to the 2010 United States Census, there were 11,782 residents throughout the state of Washington. 87.0 percent were white, 0.9% Black or African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 9.8% of another race, and 1.7 percent with two or more races. 88.5 percent comprised Hispanic or Latino (of any race).

At the time of in the Census of 2000 the population was 13,120 with 4,350 households and 3,266 families within the County. The density of the population is 7 inhabitants per square mile (3/km ²). The county had 5,543 dwelling units with the average of three per sq mile (1/km ²). The racial composition for the entire county is 80.22 percent White, 0.54% Black or African American, 0.53% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 15.46% from other races and 3.11 percent of people from multiple races. 87.99 percent of the residents comprised Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The number of households was 4,350 among which 36.80 percent had children younger than 18 years old who were living in the household, 53.20% were married couples living together, 16.80% had a female householder who had no husband present as well as 24.90 percent of households were not family-based. 22.90 percent of households were comprised of people as well as 11.70 percent of households had a person living in a home that was aged 65 or older. or older.
