History of Delta County
It was established in 1870. county was established by the year 1870 and is named after its triangular shape. It is as the Greek delta letter. Two forks of the Sulphur River created its northern and southern borders and join at the easternmost point. Delta County was one of 19 prohibition-free, or completely dry counties within the State of Texas.
Demography
At the time of 2000, according to the 2000 census in 2000, there were 5,506 inhabitants included 2,094 households as well as 1,461 families lived throughout the town. The number of people living there was 19 persons per square mile (7/km 2). The housing units of 2,410 averaged 9 square miles (3/km 2). The ethnic makeup in the County was 87.93 white, 8.28% African American, 0.77% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 1.22 percent from other races and 1.69 percentage of people from multiple races. Around 3.10 percent of the people living there were Hispanic or Latino from any race.
In the 2094 homes, 30.2% had children who were under 18 in the household, 56.4% were married couples living together, 10.0% had a female householder who had no husband and 30.2 percent were not family households. The majority of households comprised 27.5 percent of households were comprised of individuals. 14.7 percent of households had a person living on their own who was or over. The median household size was 2.49 The average size of a family was 3.02.
For the County, distribution of age was 25.6 percent under 18 years old, 7.5% for 18-to 24 25.5 percent from the age of 25-44, 23.8 percent from the age of 45-64 from 45 to 64, and 17.7 percent of those aged 65 and over. In the median, there was a age of 39. To every female they had 94.50 males. In 100 women 18 or over they had 88.90 males.
The median earnings for households within the County was $29,094, while for a family, $37,925. Males earned a median of $31,597 and $20,296 females. The per-capita earnings in the County was $1,080. Around 14.60 percent of households and 17.60 percent of the people lived under the poverty threshold that includes 20.50 percent of those who were younger than 18 years old and 20.60 percent of people 65 and over.
