History of Austin County

The development of towns within Austin County began in 1823 when San Felipe de Austin was selected as the capital of the community by the initial colonists and they were accompanied by the Baron de Bastrop. It was given the name after the patron saint of Austin as well as Stephen F. Austin

Demography

According to 2000, the 2000 census in 2000, there were 23,590 residents were living in households of 8,747 and 6,481 families resided within the county. The density of the population was 36 inhabitants in a sq mile (14/km ²). The 10,205 housing units had an average of 16 square miles (6/km ²). The ethnic makeup for the entire county is 80.22 percent White, 10.64% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 6.99 percent from other races and 1.58 percent of multiple races. Around 16.13 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino from any race and 26.9 percent were German, 8.0% Czech, 6.4% English, and 5.0 5.0% Irish the census of 2000.

Of the households of 8,747, 34.70% had children younger than 18 living in them. 60.60 percent are married couples that live together. 9.60 percent were female householders with no husband present. 25.90 percent were not families; 22.80% of all households were comprised of people, and 11.50 percent had someone living in a home on their own and was 65 years old or older. The average size of a household is 2.67 as well as the typical size of a family was 3.14.

The county’s number of people living there was 27.00 percent of the population was younger than 18 years old, 8.10% from 18 to 24. 26.40 percent from 25 to 44 23.70 percent from age 45-64 in the range of 45-64, and 14.80 percent of those that were 65 years old or the age of 65 or over. The average age was 38 years old. In 100 women they had 96.50 males. In 100 women 18 and above the number was 92.90 males.
