History of Matagorda County

Matagorda had been abandoned after the Mexican invasion. Matagorda County was formed when people returned from San Jacinto and made it the county seat in 1836. Matagorda flourished and soon received a newspaper and numerous schools. Christ Episcopal Church is known as the oldest Episcopal Church in Texas.

Demography

In in the Census at the time of 2000, 37957 residents, 13901 households and 9,925 families lived throughout the town. The density of the population was 34 persons for every sq mile (13/km ²). The housing units of 18,611 averaged 17 people per mile ^2. (6/km ²). The race composition in the County was 67.83 percent white, 12.72% African American, 0.67% Native American, 2.38% Asian, 14.02 percent from other races and 2.38 percent of at least two races. The county was home to 31.35 percent of the residents comprised Hispanic or Latino from any race. Based on ethnicity, 10.3% were of German, 8.2% American, 5.4% English, and 5.2 percent Irish according to the census of 2000. 73.9 percent were fluent in English, 24.0% Spanish and 1.6 percent Vietnamese as their primary language.

Of the 13901 families, 36.70% had children younger than 18 in their homes, 53.80 percent are married couples who live together. 12.70 percent included a female householder who had no husband present and 28.60 percent of households were not families. Around 25.10 percent of households were comprised of people as well as 10.40 percent had a person living in a home on their own and was 65 years old or older. The median household size was 2.70 and the median number of families was 3.25.

The county’s proportion of people aged was 30.00 percent of people younger than 18 years old, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 26.90% from 25 to 44, 21.80% from 45 to 64 and 12.40 percent aged 65 years or older. the age of 65 or over. In the median, there was a age of 35. To every female, they had 98.60 males. When 100 females were aged 18 or over it was 95.50 males.

Earnings

The median earnings for households for the entire county of $32,174 and for a family of four, $40,586. Males earned a median of $37,733 as opposed to the females’ $21,871. The per-capita amount of income in the County was $16,709. The county’s per capita income was $15,709. 14.90 percent of households and 18.50 percent of the total population lived less than the poverty threshold which included 23.00 percent of people younger than 18 years old and 13.60 percent of those aged 65 or older.
