History of Harris County
Harris County is one of the largest counties in Texas, with an area of 1,777 square miles. It has a population of 3.5 million people and it is the third-most populous county in the United States. Harris County is also home to Houston, which is the fourth largest city in the country.
The county was established on December 29th, 1836 and it was named after John Richardson Harris who was an early Texas politician and soldier.
Demography
At the time of the census in 2000, 3,400,578 residents were living in households of 1,205,516 and 834,217 families inhabited the county, which makes it the most populous county in terms of the number of inhabitants in Texas. The density of the population was 1,967 people per sq mile (759/km 2). The housing units of 1,298,130 averaged 751 square miles (290/km 2). The ethnic makeup for the entire county was 58.7 percent white, 18.5% Black or African American, 0.5% Native American, 5.1% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 14.2% from other races and 3.0 percent of at least two races. Around 32.9 percent of the population included Hispanic and Latinos of all races. 7.2 percent were German, 6.2 percent American and 5.3 percent of English ancestral ancestry, in the census of 2000. Around 63.8 percent spoke English when at home whereas 28.8 percent spoke Spanish and 1.6 percent spoke Spanish. Vietnamese.
In 2000, out of 1205 516 families, 37.7 percent had kids younger than 18 living in them, 50.6% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder without a husband present as well as 30.8 percent of households were not families. The majority of households comprised 25.1 percent of households were comprised of individuals. 5.3 percent of households had someone living on their own who was aged 65 or older. or older. The median household size is 2.79 while the median size of a family was 3.38.
In the county there was a population distribution in the following order: 29.00 percent of the population was below the age of 18, 10.3% from 18 to 24, 33.4% from 25 to 44, 19.8% from 45 to 64 as well as 7.4 percent of those with 65 years of the age of 65 or over.
The median household income for the entire county of $42,598, while for a family, it was $49,004. Males earned a median of $37,361 as opposed to the female’s $28,941. The per-capita income of the County was $11,435. Around 12.1 percent of households and 15.0 percent of the population were living below the poverty level which included 19.6 percent of people younger than 18 years old and 12.2 percent of people 65 or older.
