History of Gaines County
Gaines one of the signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence, the county was established from Bexar County in 1876. Anglo settlement in the region began in 1895, when the county became officially formed in 1905. Seminole was designated as the county seat in 1905 and a courthouse was constructed in 1906.
Demography
At the time of 2000, the Census of 2000 the population was 14,467 with 4,681 households and 3,754 families within the County. The density of the population is 10 inhabitants per square mile (4/km 2). In the county, there were 5,410 dwelling units, with an average rate of four per sq mile (1/km 2). The racial composition for the entire county is 80.28 percent White, 2.28% Black or African American, 0.76% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 14.17% from other races and 2.35 percent of the population was from multiple races. 35.77 percent of the residents comprised Hispanic and the Latino of any race.
The number of households was 4,681 among which 45.30 percent had children younger than 18 with them. 67.70 percent of them were spouses who lived together. 8.80 percent had female housekeepers without a husband present as well as 19.80 percent of households were not family-owned. 18.20 percent of households were comprised of only one person as well as 8.60 percent of households had someone living on their own who was aged 65 or older. or older. The median household size is 3.07 while the median size of a family was 3.53.
The county’s population was distributed by age, with 35.00 percent of the population younger than 18 years old, 9.50% from 18 to 24, 26.80% from 25 to 44, 18.40% from 45 to 64 45 to 64, and 10.30 percent that were 65 years old or more. the age of 65 or over.
