History of Fannin County

The county was initially to be known as Independence however, during the beginning of debates regarding the bill, The name changed and was changed Fannin to honor James Walker Fannin, Jr., a martyred hero of the Texas Revolution. The bill, which was ratified on the 14th of December 1837, declared the home of Jacob Black the state house until a better location could be located.

Demography

According to in the Census at the time of 2000 there were 31,242 residents, 11,105 households and 7,984 households resided within the county. The density of the population of 35 persons per sq mile (14/km 2). 12887 houses had an average of 14 people per square mile (6/km 2). The ethnic makeup in the County was 86.56 percent White, 7.96% African American, 0.92% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 2.81 percent of other races and 1.49 percent of multiple races. The county was home to 5.61 percent of the inhabitants were Hispanic or Latino from any race. In 2015 the top self-reported ancestry groups included 48.50 percent English, 16.10 percent Welsh, 11.00 percent German and 7.25 75% Irish.

Of the households of 11,105, 31.10% had children who were younger than 18 in their homes, 57.90 percent of them were couples that lived in a marriage. 10.30 percent of households were female householders with no husband and 28.10 percent were not family-based. The majority of 25.20 percent of all households were comprised of people, and 12.70 percent of households had a person living in a home on their own and was aged 65 or older. or older. The average size of a household was 2.51 and the median number of families was 2.99.

In the county the population was split in the following order: 23.20 percent of people younger than 18 years old, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 28.60% from 25 to 44, 23.20% from 45 to 64 from 45 to 64, and 16.10 percent aged 65 years or older. the age of 65 or over. In the median, there was a age range of 38. To every female the number was 113.80 males. In 100 women 18 and above the number was 116.90 males.
