History of Donley County
The region now known as Donley County was part of the the Plains Apaches up to the 18th century until the eighteenth century, after which Comanches and Kiowas came into the region. A number of Spanish and American explorations were conducted through the region; in 1787 Pedro Vial crossed the county and, in 1788, Santiago Fernandez followed Vial’s route.
Demography
At the time of the census in 2000, 3,828 residents included 1,578 households and 1,057 families lived in the county. The density of the population of four persons per square mile (2/km 2). The housing units in the 2,378 were 3 square miles (1/km 2). The ethnic makeup for the entire county is 91.41 percent White, 3.94% Black or African American, 0.89% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 2.72% from other races as well as 0.94 percent from multiple races. The county’s population was 6.35 percent of the people living there were Hispanic or Latino from any race.
In the 1,578 households, 24.80% had children younger than 18 living in them. 56.70 percent of them were couples who lived together as married, 7.50 percent had female housekeepers without a husband present and 33.00 percent were not family households. The majority of 31.40 percent of households were comprised of single people, while 17.00 percent had someone living on their own who was aged 65 or older. or older. The median household size of 2.30 was 2.30 and the median family size was 2.86.
The county’s population was divided as 22.40 percent younger than 18 years old, 9.80% from 18 to 24, 20.60% from 25 to 44, 25.50% from 45 to 64 from 45 to 64, and 21.70 percent of those aged 65 years or older. the age of 65 or over. In the median, there was 43. In 100 women they had 94.40 males. In 100 women 18 or over they had 91.70 males.
The median earnings for households within the County was $29,000 while for the family, $37,287. Males earned a median of $24,375 as opposed to 18,000 for women.
