History of Dallam County

Dallam County was formed in 1876, derived from parts that were part of Bexar County. The county was named in honor of James Wilmer Dallam, the lawyer who wrote his first edition in Texas laws. The first settlements within the region followed in 1870 and resulted to the Red River War of 1874 and 1875 between the indigenous Comanche and Kiowa tribes.

Demography

In 2000, the Census of 2000 in 2000, there were 6,222 residents who resided in 2,317 households. There were also 1,628 families within the county. The density of the population was 4 persons for every sq mile (2/km 2). It was home to 2,697 households with an average rate of two per sq mile (1/km 2). The ethnic makeup in the County was 82.64 percent White, 1.64% Black or African American, 0.90% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 12.41% from other races as well as 2.20 percentage of at least two races. 28.38 percent of the population comprised Hispanic and the Latino regardless of race. According to ancestry data, 19.6% were of German 82 percent were Irish 7,1 percent were English 55% were of American and 2,8% of French and 2,7 percent were Scotch-Irish, and 1,6% were Dutch.

The number of households was 2,317 among which 39.00 percent had children under 18 years old that were in their homes, 55.10% were married couples living together, 9.70% had a female householder without a husband present and 29.70 percent of households were not family-owned. 26.20 percent of households were comprised of people with no spouses, and 10.00 percent of households had a person living on their own who was 65 years old or older. The median household size of 2.68 while the median size of a family was 3.24.

The county’s population was distributed across the county, with 31.80 percent aged 18 or less, 8.60% from 18 to 24, 28.80% from 25 to 44, 20.60% from 45 to 64 and 10.30 percent of the population was aged 65 or older. In the median, there was a age range of 31. In 100 females, there was 102.00 males. In 100 women aged 18 and above they had 101.30 males.

The median income of households within the County was $27,946, while the median family income was $33,558. Males had a median earnings of $27,244 against the female’s $19,000. The per-capita earnings in the County was $3,653. Around 11.30 percent of households and 14.10 percent of the total population was under the poverty limit that includes 15.40 percent of the population aged 18 or less and 24.80 percent of those aged 65 or older.
