History of Briscoe County
The county was established in 1876. It was later organized in 1892. It was named after Andrew Briscoe who was a soldier in the Texas Revolution. Charles Goodnight and John George Adair founded the large JA Ranch in Briscoe County.
Demography
The census 2000 showed that there were 1,790 residents, 724 households and 511 families in the county. The population density in the county was 2 per square mile (1/km 2). The average housing unit density was 1 per square mile (0/km 2). The county’s racial makeup was 83.35% white, 2.29% Black, African American, 0.39% Native American and 0.06% Asian. There were also 2.46% of two or more races. 22.74 percent of the population was Hispanic, Latino.
There were 724 households. 29.30% of them had children under 18 years of age, 59.30% were married couple living together, 7.60% were female householders with no husband, and 29.40% weren’t families. 26.90% of households were composed of individuals and 16.01% had someone who was 65 or older. The average size of a household was 2.47, and that of a family was 3.03.
The county had a spread population with 27.10% of the population under 18 years old, 6.80% of the population aged 18-24, 22.00% between 25 and 44, 24.80% between 45 and 64, 19.30% of the population 65 years or older. The median age was 40. There were 95.00 males for every 100 females. There were 92.80 men for every 100 females over 18 years old.
The county’s median income was $29,917 for a household and $35,326 for a family. The median income for males was $25,854 and $17,500 respectively. The per-capita income was $14,218. A little over 11.50% and 16.0% of the county’s population fell below the poverty level. This includes 23.00% for those aged under 18 and 12.50% for those 65 and older.
