History of Angelina County

According to the census in 2010 it was reported that the population was 86.771. The city seat of the county is Lufkin. Lufkin County was created in 1846, from Nacogdoches County. The name is derived from an Hasinai Indian woman from the Native Americans who aided the early Spanish missionaries. She was dubbed Angelina by the missionaries.

Demography

At the time of 2000, the 2000 census of 2000 the population was 80,130 28685 households and 21,255 families within the county. The density of population of 100 persons per sq mile (39/km 2). There were 32,435 housing units with an average rate of people per sq mile (16/km 2). The racial composition for the entire county is 75.10 white, 14.72% Black or African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.67% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 7.77% from other races and 1.42 percent of multiple races. 14.35 percent of the residents comprised Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 28685 households among which 36.10 percent had children younger than 18 years old living in the household, 57.80 percent of them were couple who were married that lived in the same house, 12.30 percent of households had women who had no husband present and 25.90 percent were not families. 22.80 percent of households were comprised of people as well as 9.80 percent of households had a person living on their own who was 65 years old or older. The average size of a household is 2.70 as well as the typical size of the family was 3.18.

The county’s inhabitants were spread out across the county, with 27.70 percent of the population aged 18 or less, 9.70% from 18 to 24, 28.60% from 25 to 44, 21.50% from 45 to 64 and 12.60 percent aged 65 years or older. the age of 65 or over. Median age: 34. In 100 females,, there are 96.40 males. In 100 women 18 and above they had 93.70 males.
