History of Moore County

This county was founded by the state of Texas in 1876 and was incorporated in 1892. It was named after Edwin Ward Moore, the commanding officer in the Texas Navy. Dumas is the Dumas micropolitan statistical region includes the entirety the territory of Moore County. Moore County history is highlighted in the Window on the Plains Museum located in Dumas.

Demography

At the time of the 2000 census in 2000 20121 people, 6,774 households and 5,331 families resided living in this county. The density of population was 22 people/sq mile (9/km 2). There 7 478 housing units, with the average of 8 units per sq mile (3/km 2). The race composition for the entire county is 63.93 percent white, 0.69% Black or African American, 0.67% Native American, 0.86% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 31.20% from other races and 2.62 percentage of people from multiple races. 47.50 percent of the people comprised Hispanic and Latinos of all races. Of the households of 6,774, 44.80 percent had children under 18 years old living in them. 65.10 percent of them were couples who lived together. 9.00 percent were occupied by one female householder who had no husband present and 21.30 percent were not families. 18.20 percent of households comprised only one person. 8.30 percent were comprised of one person who was 65 or over. The average size of a household of 2.94 while the median size of the family was 3.36.

The distribution of age was 33.60 percent under 18 years old, 9.20% from 18 to 24, 28.40% from 25 to 44, 18.30% from 45 to 64 and 10.60 percentage of people 65 or over. The median age was 30 years old. To every female it was 100.60 males. In 100 women 18 or over they had 97.40 males.

In the median, household earnings were $34,852 while it was the average family’s income that reached $37,985. Males earned a median of $29,843 as opposed to $19,383 for females. The per capita income of in the County of $15,214. Around 10.10 percent from families, and 13.50 percent of the population lived less than the poverty threshold that includes 18.10 percent of people who were younger than 18 years old and 10.90 percent of those aged 65 and over.
