History of Hartley County

In 1891, the county was incorporated with the small city of Hartley as the county seat. The county judge Rucker Tanner was the judge of the commissioners’ court, comprised from Dick Pincham, W. C. Ferguson, George W. Knighton as well as G. W. Lambert. Ben Lawson became the county clerk while J. M. Robinson was named sheriff. M. Montoya became the tax assessor-collector while J. H. Little was appointed the county attorney. Following an election in 1896 the county administration was relocated to Channing in the same location, and it remained regardless of repeated attempts to relocate it back. In 1903, a final election established Channing as the official county seat. In 1898, a weekly paper, the Channing Courier was established.
