History of Chambers County

Chambers County was formed in 1858 out of Liberty as well as Jefferson counties and was established the following year, with Wallisville as the county seat. Census returns from 1858 included merino sheep, 26,632 cattle, and just 344 slaves across the county, which is a sign of the importance of livestock to the local economy.

Demography

At the time of 2000’s Census for 2000, 26 031 residents included 9,139 households and 7,219 families lived throughout the town. The density of the population was 43 inhabitants per square mile (17/km ²). Ten,336 homes had an average of 17 sq miles (7/km ²). The race composition in the County was 81.88 percent white, 9.77% African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.67% Asian, 6.02 percentage of other races and 1.18 percent of multiple races. Around 10.79 percent of the residents included Latinos and Hispanics regardless of race.

In the 9139 household, 40.60% had children who were younger than 18 in their homes, 65.70 percent are married couples who live together. 9.00 percent were female householders with no husband and 21.00 percent of households were not families. The majority of households comprised 17.80 percent of households were comprised of individuals. 6.70 percent of households had a person living on their own who was 65 years old or older. The average size of a household was 2.82 The average size of a family was 3.20.

The county’s proportion of people aged between 18 and 44 was 28.90 percent for those under 18 years old, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 29.90% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64 from 45 to 64, and 9.00 percent who were older than 65. It was the average age, 35. To every female the number was 100.60 males. When 100 females were 18 and older it was 99.80 males.

The median income of households of the area was $47.964, and for a family of four, the figure was $52,986. Males earned a median of $43,351 as opposed to the females’ average of $25,478. The per-capita earnings in the County was $29,863. Around 8.30 percent of households and 11.00 percent of the population lived under the poverty limit that includes 13.30 percent of people aged 18-29 and 12.60 percent of people 65 or older.
