History of Cass County

1846 – Cass County was established on April 25, 1846 after the dissolution of Bowie County. It was named after Lewis Cass, U.S. senator from Michigan. The county was called Cass County in honor of Lewis Cass, a United States Senator from Michigan who was a proponent of the annexed territory of Texas.

Demography

In in the 2010 census of 2010 there were 30,464 residents with 12,190 households and 8654 families living within the County. In 2010, the number of people living in the county is 32 inhabitants per square mile (13/km ²). There 1389 housing units in an average rate of 15 people per sq mile (6/km ²). The racial composition for the entire county was 78.20 percent White, 19.47% Black or African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.65% from other races as well as 1.05 percentage of people from multiple races. 1.73 percent of the population comprised Hispanic and the Latino from any ethnic group.
