History of Burleson County
Burleson was formed in 1846 by Milam and Washington Counties. Edward Burleson was a Texas Revolution hero and the county was named after him. Caldwell is the county seat. It is also the region’s agribusiness centre.
Demography
The county had 16,470 residents, 6,363 households and 4,574 families as of 2000 census. The population density stood at 25 people per square mile (10/km 2). The average housing unit density was 12 per square mile (5/km 2). 74.07% of the population was white. 15.06% were black or African Americans, 0.17% Asian, 0.027% Pacific Islander, 0.02% Native American, 0.02% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander and 8.25% came from other races. 1.92% came from two or more races. The Hispanic and Latino populations made up 14.64% of the total population. According to Census 2000, 18.8% of the population were German, 11.3% American and 10.7% Czech ancestry.
There were 6,363 households. 31.90% of these households had children younger than 18 years, 56.40% were married couple living together, 11.40% included a female householder without a husband, and 28.10% weren’t families. 22.9% of all households consisted of individuals and 12.4% had someone 65 or older living alone. The average household size was 2.57, and the average family size 3.08.
The county had a spread population with 26.90% of the population under 18 years old, 8.00% between 18-24 and 24 and 25.80% between 25-44, 23.20% between 45-64, 16.10% 65 years or older. The median age was 38. There were 94.70 men for every 100 females. There were 91.50 men for every 100 females over 18 years old.
The county’s median income was $33,026, while that of a family was $39 and 385. The median income for males was $28,795 while that of females was $20,146. The per-capita income was $16,616. The poverty level was reached by 13.20% and 17.20% respectively in the county. This includes 22.90% for those aged 18 to 65 and 14.30% for those 65 and over.
