History of Garza County

Garza County was formed from Bexar County in 1876. It was first settled by ranchers during the middle of the 1870s, after buffalo hunting had almost destroyed the herds. The first ranchers from County were Andy Long and Frank Long, who stocked the south-facing range from the Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos to the OS Ranch.

Demography

According to 2000, the 2000 census in 2000 there were 4,872 residents were living in households of 1,663 and 1,217 families inhabited the county. The density of the population was 5 people/sq mile (2/km 2). There were 1,928 dwelling units that had an average of 2 sq miles (1/km 2). The ethnic makeup for the entire county is 56.7 percent White, 4.8 African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.1% Asian, 17.1% from other races and 3.00 percent of three or more races. Latinos and Hispanics of any race made up 37.2 percent of the total county’s population.

Of the households of 1,663, 36.0% had children younger than 18 in their homes, 58.5% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder who had no husband and 26.8 percent of households were not families. Around 23.8 percent of households were comprised of people, and 12.0 percent of households had a person living in a home on their own and was aged 65 or over. The median household size of 2.65 while the median size of a family was 3.15.

In the county the population was split according to 28.00 percent younger than 18 years old, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 28.60% from 25 to 44, 21.30% from 45 to 64 from 45 to 64, and 14.10 percent that were 65 years old or more. the age of 65 or over. The average age was 35. To every female the number was 112.30 males. To every female aged 18 or over the number was 111.30 males.

The median household income of the area was $27206 while the median for a household, $31,173. Males had a median salary of $26,604 and 18,000 a year for women. The per-capita amount of income of the entire county was $12,704. The county’s per capita income was $12,704. 17.50 percent of households and 22.30 percent of the people living there were less than the poverty threshold that includes 29.6 percent of those who were younger than 18 years old and 18.6 percent of those aged 65 and over.
