History of Denton County

Denton County was established by the Texas legislature on April 11, 1846, shortly after Texas abandoned its dream of being a Republic and joined the United States. Early pioneers settled along the Trinity River and its tributaries and on the edge of the frontier as it moved westward.

Demography

In the year 2015, according to the Texas Population Estimate Program, the county’s population is 778,846, other whites who are not Hispanic. 459,448 (59.0 percent), Black Americans 70,040 (8.9 percent) and non-Hispanics, 85,406 (11.0 11.0 %). Hispanics as well as Hispanics and Latinos (of every race) 164,952 (21.2 percent).

In the the 2010 United States Census, there were 662,614 residents with 224,840 households, and 256,139 housing units within the county. Its number of people living in the county is 754.3 inhabitants per sq mile. The ethnic makeup for the entire county was 75 percent White, 8.4% African American, 0.7% Native American, 6.6% Asian and 3.0 percentage of people from one or two race groups. The county’s population was 18.2 percent of the people living there were Hispanic and Latino from any race. Denton County ranked 29th on the list by the US Census Bureau of counties that grew the fastest in the years 2000-2007 with the number of people growing by 41.4 percentage growth in the population.

An Williams Institute analysis of the census data for 2010 revealed 5.2 same-sex couples per household within the county.
