History of Colorado County
Colorado County, one of the counties that was the initial to be established in the Republic of Texas, was established in 1836. It was established in 1837 The first district court was conducted under Robert M. Williamson in April 1837 in Columbus, which was the county seat. By 1840 , there were 249 families with heads and 319 slaves within the county.
Demography
At the time of 2000, according to the Census at the time of 2000 there were 20,390 residents were living in the county, with 7,641 households, and 5,402 families lived within the County. In the 7,641 households, 31.1% had children who were under 18 in the household, 56.3% were married couples living together, 10.9% had a female householder without a husband present and 29.3 percent were not family-based. Around 26.2 percent of households were comprised of people, and 14.4 percent of households had a person living in a home that was or over. The median household size was 2.56 The average size of a family was 3.08.
Within the County, distribution of age was 25.6 percent below 18 years old, 8.9 percentage between 18-24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and % were 65 years old or older. It was the average age 39. To every female the number was 95.30 males. In 100 women 18 and above they had 92.40 males.
