History of Clay County

It was established in 1857, and was later organized in the year 1860. It was named in honour the memory of Henry Clay, famous American statesman, Kentucky Senator and United States Secretary of State. Clay County is part of the Wichita Falls, Metropolitan Statistical Area located in North Texas.

Demography

At the time of in the Census in 2000 the population was 11,006 in the county, including 4,323 households, and 3,181 families living throughout the county. The density of population is 10 persons per sq mile (4/km ²). It was home to 4,992 residents with an average rate of four per sq mile (2/km ²). The racial composition in the County was 95.35 percent White, 0.42% Black or African American, 1.03% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.68% from other races as well as 1.42 percent of the population was from multiple races. 3.67 percent of the total population were Hispanic as well as the Latino regardless of race. With 89.4 percent of the population of the county, Clay County has the highest proportion of non-Hispanic whites across the entire state in Texas.
