History of Brooks County

1911–Brooks County created 11 March 1911 out of Starr, Zapata and Hidalgo Counties. John Brooks was the founder of the county. John Abijah Brooks (State Representative) was able to get Brooks County seperated from Starr County. Falfurrias is the county seat.

Demography

According to the 2010 United States Census 7,223 people lived in the county. 89.6% of them were White, 0.5% African American and 0.3% Native American. About 91.2% of the population were Hispanic/Latino (of any raciality).

The census 2000 showed that 7,976 people, 2,711 families, and 2,079 households inhabited the county. The population density averaged 8 people per square mile (3.1/km 2). Average housing unit size was 3/sq mi (1.2/km 2). The county’s racial composition was 75.84% White with 0.19% African American and 0.46% Native American. The Hispanic and Latino population accounted for 91.57%.

38.90% of the households had children younger than 18 years old, 52.20% had married couples living together, 19.10% were female householders with no husband, and 23.30% weren’t families. Around 21.40% of all households consisted of individuals and 11.30% were composed of someone 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.92 and the average family size 3.38.

The county’s age distribution was 31.60% below the age of 18, 8.90% between 18 and 24, 23.40% between 25 and 44, 21.70% at 45 to 64, 11.40% from 45 to 64, 14.40% for those 65 years or older. The median age was 34. There were 94.20 men for every 100 females. There were 89.90 men for every 100 females over 18 years old.

The county’s median income was $18,622 for a household and $22,473 for a family. The median income for males was $23,051 and $16,103 respectively. The per-capita income was $10,234. The poverty level was reached by 40.20% of households and 36.90% were from families. This includes 51.70% for those aged 18 to 65 and 30.40% for those 65 and over.
