History of Andrews County

Andrews County came into existence in 1876, when Andrews County was established when 15th Legislature of Texas established 54 counties within the Panhandle and South Plains. The county was named after Richard Andrews, the 1st man to die in the fight for Texas independence in 1835.

Demography

In the census of the year 2010 there were 14,786 people living within the county. 79.5 percent were white, 1.5% Black or African American, 1.0% Native American, 0.6% Asian, 15.5% of another race and 2.0 percentage with two or more races. 48.7 percent of them of them were Hispanic or Latino (of any race).

At the time of in the Census of 2000 the population was 13,004 with 4,601 households and 3,519 families living within the county. The density of the population of 9 persons per sq mile (3/km ²). In the county, there were 5400 dwelling units with A density average of 4 people per sq mile (1/km ²). The ethnic makeup in the County was 77.08 percent white, 1.65% Black or African American, 0.88% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 16.79% from other races and 2.87 percentage of people from multiple races. 40.00 percent of the population comprise Hispanic or Latino , regardless of race.

In total, there were 4601 families among which 40.70 percent had children younger than 18 years old who were living in the household, 63.70% were married couples living together, 9.50% had a female householder without a husband present or present, and 23.50 percent were not families. 21.80 percent of all households were comprised of people with no spouses, and 10.00 percent of households had a person living in a home on their own and was 65 years old or older.
