History of Real County

Real COUNTY located within the Edwards Plateau, Real County is situated in flat terrain that is bounded by the canyons of Frio River. Due to the attacks of Comanche, Apache, and Lipan Apache Indians White settlement was not allowed until 1881. Mission San Lorenzo de La Santa Cruz was established under the Spanish in 1762, near the present Camp Wood. The county was established by the government on March 3, 1913 after Edwards, Kerr as well as Bandera counties. formed on July 26, 1913. The county was named in the honor of Julius Real (1860-1944), an influential businessman and state senatorfrom 1909-1914 , and 1924-1928. Leakey Leakey County, which is which is the seat of county government, was founded through John Leakey (1824-1900), an early settler within the area. (1968)
