History of Franklin County

The county was declared a state park with the help of lawmakers in the month of March 1875 and was named after the judge Benjamin C. Franklin, one of the first Red River County settler. The county’s first election took place in April, 1875 to determine the county seat. Mount Vernon won by a significant majority, and the election was never again in dispute.
