History of Coryell County

Coryell County (1,057 square mile area) was established by the Texas legislators in 1854 and is named after James Coryell (1796-1837 Texas Ranger) the first explorator in the area. Gatesville is Coryell County’s seat was built out of Fort Gates, established in 1849 in order to safeguard settlers from invading Indians.
