History of Clay County
It was established in 1857, and was later organized in the year 1860. It was named in honour the memory of Henry Clay, famous American statesman, Kentucky Senator and United States Secretary of State. Clay County is part of the Wichita Falls, Metropolitan Statistical Area located in North Texas.
Demography
At the time of in the Census in 2000 the population was 11,006 in the county, including 4,323 households, and 3,181 families living throughout the county. The density of population is 10 persons per sq mile (4/km 2). It was home to 4,992 residents with an average rate of four per sq mile (2/km 2). The racial composition in the County was 95.35 percent White, 0.42% Black or African American, 1.03% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.68% from other races as well as 1.42 percent of the population was from multiple races. 3.67 percent of the total population were Hispanic as well as the Latino regardless of race. With 89.4 percent of the population of the county, Clay County has the highest proportion of non-Hispanic whites across the entire state in Texas.
In total, there were 432 households among which 30.70 percent had children under 18 years of age who were living in the household, 63.20% were married couples living together, 7.30% had a female householder without a husband present and 26.40 percent were not families. 23.50 percent of all households were comprised of people with no spouses, and 11.80 percent of households had a person living on their own who was 65 years old or older. The median household size of 2.52 and the median family size was 2.98.
The county’s population was dispersed across the county, with 24.90 percent of people younger than 18 years old, 6.80% from 18 to 24, 26.40% from 25 to 44, 25.90% from 45 to 64 and 16.10 percent of people aged 65 years or older. old or older. It was the average age of 40. To every 100 females the number was 94.00 males. To every female 18 or over the number was 93.10 males.
The median income of households within the County was $35,738, while the median family income was $41,514. Males earned a median of $28,914 and $20,975 females. The per capita income of this county is $16,361. The county had 8.10 percent of households and 10.30 percent of the total people living in the county were below the poverty line, which included 11.70 percent of people younger than 18 years old and 11.00 percent of people 65 or older.
