History of Baylor County

Baylor County was established in 1858 by Fannin County, but was not officially established until 1879 when it was incorporated with Seymour serving as its county seat.. It was named after Henry Weidner Baylor, a surgeon with the Texas Rangers during the Mexican-American War. Baylor County was formed in 1858 after the dissolution of Fannin County.

Demography

In the census of 2000, 4,093 individuals included 1,791 households as well as 1,156 families resided within the county. The density is five per square mile (2/km ²). The housing units in the 2,820 were on average one per square mile (1/km ²). The composition of the racial groups in the County was 90.96 percent White, 3.35% Black or African American, 0.59% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 3.32% from other races[and 1.15 percent of multiple races. 9.33 percent were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the households that comprised 1,791, 25.2% had children less than 18 living in them. 53.5 percent of them were couples who lived together as married, 8.2 percent had females as householders without a husband present and 35.4 percent of households were not families. Additionally, 33.30% of all households were composed of people. 19.2 percent of households had someone living on their own who was 65 years old or older. The median household size is 2.26 and the average size of a family was 2.86.

In the county the population was split in the following order: 23.4 percent younger than 18 years old, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 21.4% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64 from 45 to 64, and 24.1 percent that were 65 years old or more. the age of 65 or over. The median age was 45 years old. In 100 women they had 89.50 males. In 100 women 18 and above the number was 86.70 males.

The median earnings for households for the entire county of $24,627 while for the family, $34,583. Males earned a median of $21,607 and $19,571 for females. The per capita income of County was $15,384. The county had 16.1 percent of people and 12.9 percent of families resided below the poverty level, and 26.3 percent of people younger than 18 and 9.3 percent of people 65 or older lived in poverty.
