History of Deaf Smith County

Description. It was named after Erastus “Deaf” Smith[4[4] (1787-1837) A partially deaf soldier and scout who was a soldier during the Texas Revolution and was the first to arrive at the Alamo after the fall of the Alamo. The county is situated in the southwest part of the state.

Demography

In 2000, the 2000 census at the time of 2000, 1856 inhabitants were living in the county, including 6,180 households, and 4,832 families lived in the county. The density of the population was 12 people per sq mi (5/km 2). The 6,914 housing units had an average of 5,sq miles (2/km 2). The ethnic makeup for the entire county is 72.28 percent white, 1.51% African American, 0.80% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.13 percent Pacific Islander, 22.92% from other races and 2.11 percent of the population was from at least two races. The county was home to 57.40 percent of the people living there were Hispanic and Latino, regardless of race.

In the 6,180 households, 41.00% had children younger than 18 living in them, 61.00% were married couples living together, 12.60% had a female householder who had no husband and 21.80 percent were not families. The average of 19.70 percent of all households were made up of individuals, while 10.00 percent of households had a person living on their own who was aged 65 or older. or older. The median household size is 2.96 while the median size of a family was 3.41.

Within the County, age distribution was 33.30 percent of those under the age of 18. 9.60 percent between 18 and 24 years old, 25.50 percent from age 25-44, 19.40 percentage from the age of 45 until 64 as well as 12.10 percent of those aged 65 and over. In the median, there was a age range of 31. In 100 women it was 95.50 males. To every female 18 and above the number was 91.90 males.
